Understanding WHERE WE ARE IN PLACE AND TIME take groupwork both inside the school and outside as well. Our 2nd and 3rd grade class has been working on being COMMUNICATORS not only in English class, but also in science, music, and Estonian!
One of the key concepts we are focusing on with the 2nd and 3rd grade in our current theme (Where We are in Place and Time) is making a connection with the outside world. Our school is a very unique and interesting place. The weather, seasons, landforms, bodies of water, and environment in Tartu are not the same as other places in the world or even other places in Estonia! We have a lot to learn from the experience of others in the past and today.
In Estonian class last week: Students wrote emails to a ‘penpal’ in Pärnu. This was not only a great way for students to learn about writing in Estonian, but it was also a chance for them to gain practical experience communicating using technology.
In English class: Students worked to describe their surroundings inside the school and out. We plan to send these to another school in another country to learn about different schools besides our own.
Moving forward, we will continue learning about famous individuals in the past who discovered new landforms and try to imagine what they saw.
In both English and Estonian classes, we will continue to learn vocab related to landforms and bodies of water and try to make connections with how these things affect our lives here and now.
